Yo JT: 1. Seems to be an assumption that coaching (e.g., philosophy, scheme, and play calling) is more important in football than other sports. Your take? 2. Does coaching scheme/play calling matter less as level increases (i.e., is it easier to outcoach more effectively in hs)? 3. In the nfl, it seems like no matter the coaching scheme, the players need to perform well. What is the actual "outcoaching potential" in the nfl? 4. Do you think nfl offensive coordinator play calling and scheme is overhyped by fans and media?

You never really got into the empty protections vs 11/12/13/21/22, I know it's mostly about pass/run blocking and TE matchups vs LBs but I was hoping to hear more

JT, I'm a huge Kalen DeBoer fan. Following him for a while (before Grubb became his sidekick) and am still trying to interview the guy that brought the power spread style offense to Sioux Falls way back. Kalen has an amazing OMind - the Balance of Pro and PS concepts is incredible in both Space and Timing. I feel DeBoer is developing something I call the Option Ideal - all kinds of Options all game were at the disposal of Penix, including changing plays at the LOS. There were Timing routes as well as AR (grass) and R&S Option routes -- all of it.. and put together with genius simplicity. Will Penix do as well w/o DeBoer's scheme - idk. But he's definitely had great coaching in college. He will be in another McVay scheme that's taking over the NFL (with Shanahan). Big difference from what he did with DeBoer - even though some of the WC Timing stuff is same. Will Grubb do well - I think - he's been with DeBoer a long time. MacDonald should give him the freedom - but who knows. As you said - soooo much comes in to play. Everything has to align. As for DeBoer entering Bama Country -- -hmmmm... odd -- but, the guy may be better at Culture than Offense -- or at least as good ... we will see....

JT I honestly watch your breakdowns ahead of anyone else out there. In the past I've made some "sharp" comments concerning scheme. This is something I have done on a professional level (yes, I know - no one knows who I am) and it's only meant with best intentions. I only jump on with some comments from time to time because your breakdowns are worth commenting on. So you are in the 1% bracket in this overblown age of internet nonsense. Also, you obviously know more about the game than anyone else who hasn't devoted their life to the game - as a coach and/or player and/or executive. This would include me. It's obvious in your breakdowns your high level of knowledge. I understand (to some degree) your frustration turning into trepidation somewhat at this point. I am not on your patreon because frankly, I don't have that time and can breakdown my own film, but I check out your stuff all the time. It's fantastic and educates and inspires me every time! I can't help but wonder if the "1" stand for something else in the Shanahan playbook. Like, is it denoting which coverage dictates which route? Maybe it means vs 1 Bump take the dotted route instead? Because I agree that it seems absurd to label everyone as the first read.

with the 5 man protection and a lot of reads at diffrent spots on the field why this play makes sense why this play plays well on in late game up-Tempo situation where you expect the D-Line to be kinda gassed.

Good stuff. As a Chiefs fan I felt like the end of this game the D was so gassed and after they couldn't pick up Allen's fumble it looked dire. I honestly think the OC blinked at the two-minute warning, respect the call to take a shot but really thought yhey were grinding us down. Same in the SB with 3rd & 4 at the end of regulation. KC deserves credit for their grit but honestly they were a bit fortunate too.

I've been a Bears fan going back 60+ years and agree that ownership has held back significantly on player personnel and the front office. They failed to capitalize on one of the greatest drafts in history when they picked Butkus and Sayers. It's always been about the money or lack thereof when it comes to investing in quality coaches and players. Halas was brilliant in his day but in the end the game passed him by.
